Transportation Systems Engineer
Job Description:
A systems engineer works as part of a team to design, install, maintain and develop all systems affecting the system design life cycle of a product. The aim is to develop and maintain efficient transportation systems, producing reliable and high-quality product at the lowest cost, and in the shortest time.
Transportation systems engineers work to integrate the entire SDLC process, from design through maintenance. A systematic approach to money, methods, materials and technology, across traditional departmental boundaries, is required. The latest computer technology is used, providing the means by which to take a systematic approach to system engineering.
Duties and responsibilities
- designing the layout of the system;
- designing, developing, integrating, and installing reliable transportation systems for new and existing industries including, Toll Collection, Photo Enforcement, and Commercial Vehicle Operation;
- liaising with project management, product management, subcontract engineering consultants, and various subcontracted trades;
- attending project meetings and developing and defining system requirements;
- calculating engineering costs;
- deciding on the effective use of resources, e.g. raw materials, equipment and staff;
- develop system design documentation including CAD drawings, design documents, etc;
- producing installation procedures;
- producing maintenance procedures;
- Provide engineering input to the testing process and procedures
- Support and provide engineering oversight to the testing of the system;
- identifying, investigating and repairing system faults;
- supervising the work of trainee engineers and support staff;
- overseeing the installation, repair and re-assembly of equipment;
- demonstrating new and existing equipment to systems engineers, support staff and production managers;
- discussing and evaluating systems failures with maintenance staffs and non-technical personnel;
- investigating and accounting for in the design environmental requirements;
- reviewing results and meeting with managers to discuss methods of improving the productivity of existing systems;
- investigating ways in which the latest technology could improve the productivity rate or improve performance metrics or requirements;
- sourcing new suppliers of industrial equipment;
- testing, monitoring and evaluating new components or systems;
- conducting safety tests and removing potential hazards;
- establishing and implementing a quality culture within the system engineering, construction, and maintenance environment;
- visiting other production sites;
- reading specialist journals and attending training courses and industry meetings in order to keep up to date with the latest technological developments and trends in engineering.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in system engineering or related technology degree or equivalent work experience with at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Must have experience in the integration of industrial data acquisition sensors, transportation management equipment, and information technology equipment in industrial environments. Knowledge or experience in Electronic Toll Collection, Commercial Vehicle, and Photo-Enforcement projects and systems a plus. Knowledge and or experience in automation or process control systems a plus.
Skills Needed:
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely; listen attentively and integrate large volumes of information from multiple sources
- Excellent troubleshooting skills, analytic, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Ability to resolve problems conventionally and unconventionally
- Being flexible by attempting alternate solutions to resolve issues, and seamlessly adjusting to a dynamic, changing environment
- Ability to troubleshoot issues or problems using conventional methods and unconventional methods
- Knowledge of and experience in the use and application of various test equipment including, Oscilloscopes, Spectrum Analyzers, Logic analyzers, Protocol Analyzers, Power quality meters, etc
- Background or familiarity in automated scripting language in the UNIX/LINUX environment including PERL, shell scripting, etc
- Novice to intermediate knowledge in the following operating systems, UNIX, LINUX, Windows
- Superb follow-up skills and ability to anticipate realistic time frames will be required.

- History of developing innovative and creative problem solving approaches to improving various aspects of maintenance performance including technical, personnel, and business
